The arrival of Nena, Justin and Karin makes Martin Juandika or commonly called Mr Juan feel very happy. The three were led into a large room containing a lot of food on his desk.
After speaking trite asking for the smooth running of Karin's school, the father asked Marlina, as well as other members of Nena's family, and said he wanted to invite some food someday. It was only then that Justin and the papa talked about work.
Not long after the meal was over, the topic of conversation returned to Karin and asked the mamih who had been imprisoned for several months. Nena felt, rather than with her, that middle-aged man who was her real father was more familiar with Karin, but it was better, because with that, this family's eating chat became lively, life-like, not caught in the awkwardness as Nena imagined.
"From tomorrow Karin lives at Marlina's mother's house, Om," the teenaged fight that year with a look of enthusiasm, Nena and Justin joined in smiling.
"Dad, good at it."
Karin nodded steadily, then hesitated a little to ask something. "Omm?" call him, "kalo can Karin know, how the story anyway, Bang Justin as well as Mbak Nena can taper?"
Silent.
Twenty-eight years ago, a man in his mid-thirty visited Juan's house in a state of chaos.
"I'm in a terrible accident, Martin. Help me." Help me." Rahadi sat on the porch of Juan's residence with a bruised face from a blow.
"What's going on?" Juan asked his best friend. And Rahadi told about the calamity that befell him, deceived business partners, and pursued by debt collectors, as well as the wife who was in a coma after giving birth. And as if all the sadness that befell him was not enough, the doctor again reported the news of suffering with heart abnormalities suffered by his first son after a few hours ago was born. Let alone for medical expenses, just pay for public toilets it feels so difficult for Rahadi at this time.
"I will help as much as I can" said Juan, along with a rowdy voice from inside the house that surprised him.
"Please, Master!" the middle-aged woman who was Juan's domestic assistant approached in a panic. "Mrs slipped, fell on the stairs, bleeding," he said faltering.
Juan bursts into the house with Rahadi in his arms, both taking the pregnant woman to a nearby hospital.
"Faster, Di!" Pinta Juan on his best friend. Realizing that the wife's condition was getting weaker because of the loss of blood made her panic even more.
A few hours passed with tension. Nadia, Juan's wife was unconscious and entered the operating room. Juan was so worried, Rahadi who was sitting in the waiting chair next to him could not do anything, because the situation was almost the same, because the situation was almost the same, then the man visited his wife who was also treated at the same hospital.
After a while, Rahadi returned and did not find Juan in his place, apparently the man was in front of the child's room, staring inward from behind the glass window in silence.
"My son was born" he said, after turning his head for a while, then facing back to the window.
Rahadi touched his best friend's shoulder. "Congratulations, you've become a father" he said sincerely, "what about your wife?" tanyanya.
Juan did not turn his head as he replied, "comma." And Rahadi knows how she feels.
"I can't help you, Di," said Juan regretfully, sitting on the waiting chair in front of the room.
Rahadi sat down next to her best friend. "Yes, I understand," he said, "don't think too much."
"It's not like that." Juan looked at his best friend. "My daughter, Di."
Rahadi understands. Juan once told me about the terms of his in-laws. The rich man only expects a grandson as his future successor. And if Juan could not give it, then he would be removed from the family list, he would get nothing, the father would give all his wealth to a foundation if he was gone.
"Do those terms still apply?" Rahadi asked and got a weak nod from her best friend. "Your father-in-law is very strange, where can we determine ourselves want to have a boy or girl. Everyone has arranged, what can we do?"
"But that's the truth, I can't expect much, Di. From her all-female son, she looks forward to a grandson she doesn't get from her two daughters. His hope falls on Nadia, my wife, who is the youngest child in our family." Juan said long.
Rahadi fell silent, he felt there was no other way but to pray for his wife's recovery, his only hope being a loan of money from Juan, but with his current circumstances. Rahadi could understand.
"I can help you if you want to help me too, Di." Juan grabbed his best friend's hand until the man turned his head.
"meaning?"
"Your son is a boy, and it costs a lot for surgery" Juan said.
Rahadi felt her heart stop working, she understood what her best friend wanted. "You mean, you want to exchange our son?" ask carefully. There was no answer, but from the hopeful and desperate gaze of her best friend, Rahadi knew, the answer was 'yes'.
"I don't want to!" Rahadi stood up with emotion. How could his friend think that way.
Juan stood up, "for the sake of your son's health, Di. For the survival of my family. And for your wife who needs further treatment. Think about all that."
"Are you the same as your son? You––,"
"I believe in you, I believe you can take good care of my son."
"No, Martin, I can't!" Rahadi continued to resist, but no matter how much he kept his first son, until when the baby could survive with his current condition.
Juan can certainly help if the child his wife gave birth to is a man, but with the reality of the daughter he found, let alone help him, he himself threatened to become homeless. How is this, why is it as if fate is toying with both of them, why is it not Juan who has a son, and Rahadi who has a daughter all together.
With a heavy heart and all considerations, inevitably Rahadi agreed to the idea of his best friend.
"Martin, I can't let my wife never see her son, let her see her only son once."
Hearing his best friend's request, Juan fell silent. "How will you say it."
"I would say that my son is a twin pair. With the chaos that I did make us move around to not pay attention to the fetus that Marlina was born with, until it finally happened like this. I regret not being able to give it my best during pregnancy. As a husband, I feel like I've failed."
"Why didn't you look for me in the first place?"
"Because I thought, I was able to solve it myself. I've been involving you a lot with my problems."
"We're more than friends, Di. We're brothers. We come from the same orphanage.fighting for knowledge in this great city together. And one day, we will unite our children in a bond. It's our promise that you forget."
Rahadi was embarrassed. "I'm sorry, but may I take my son for a moment to see his mother, I'll explain slowly, and he'll understand."
Juan nodded, and after that Rahadi took his son to the room where the wife was being treated. "You're sober?" Rahadi was surprised to find his wife turning her head as she opened the door.
"Where are you going, Mom?" ask Marlina weakly. "Is that our son?" the pale woman pointed at the baby in her husband's arms, her gaze very happy.
Rahadi agreed, and before the wife was overwhelmed with a sense of happiness that did not last long, she began to explain about the condition of the child in her arms, to comfort Marlina, who was not there, Rahadi immediately said that the baby that the woman was carrying turned out to be more than one. And they had to give up their first son to be adopted by Martin for further treatment that cost a lot .
Marlina understood, with her current financial condition, she had to be heartened to let one child be cared for by another. Martin has been so good with lending money for the cost of childbirth and the survival of his family in the future, of course he should not be greedy, right?
"But let me be with him for a little while, after that you can take him away" said Marlina, Juan who happened to be in the room nodding along. The man holds the baby girl that Marlina believes must be one of her twins, she leaves the room followed by Rahadi behind her.
Juan kept looking at the face of the baby sleeping in his carrier, "forgive papa, dear. One day you will understand" Juan whispered, then turned to the man beside him. "Take care of him for me" he said, then handed the princess to Rahadi with a very sad look.
"I'll replace all the money you're spending on me right now, someday."
"No need, consider it for my daughter." Juan looked back at the peaceful face of his daughter who was now in Rahadi's arms. "Give him the name of Kinanti, I will look for him someday, and we will be a family in the future" he said with confidence.
"For now, I have to go to another city, I'm afraid that one day Marlina will come to you and ruin everything."
Juan nodded. "After the kedaan has calmed down, I will look for you" he said.
And a few years later Juan continues to search for his best friend. He was so devastated after being left by his wife who no longer woke up in a coma at that time, even though all the wealth was bestowed on him and the child, he was no longer happy.
And seeing his best friend's son growing up a teenager and living well made Juan always remember the mistakes in his daughter. He was angry at himself. His anger also he vented on the child occasionally. Justin.
"I'm sorry I can't take good care of you guys." Juan ended his story with regret. Justin and Nena each clasped the papah's hand and squeezed it, channeling the power and assuring them that they were okay.
They sat on the same long sofa with Juan flanked by the two, Karin sat leaning against the single sofa, occasionally smiling in response to the chatter of father and son before her.
Until a discussion of the granddaughter was caught by him, the girl could not bear to not comment. "Om, Om's grandson doesn't have to be a boy, right?" tanyakanya.
Juan laughed, turning to his son. "it looks like girls are funnier, doesn't it Justin?"
"Ah, i-iya, I will try hard day and night" Justin said. "Ouch!!" And a pinch was felt from behind, making Karin who saw, could not bear to not laugh.
Nena was walking around the mansion alone, Karin was calling someone near the pool, while her husband and the papah were talking about work in her private room. After being satisfied around, the woman returned to the family room and captured a photo on the nightstand that she almost passed. A picture of a baby girl, Nena was familiar with the photo, and she grabbed it, along with the hand of someone holding her from behind.
"Let's go home," Justin asked, his gaze falling on the photo in his wife's grasp. "Why?" tanyakanya.
"Why is my picture here?"
Justin was stunned, a photo that used to be held by the papah when he fell asleep on the sofa, and he thought it was a photo of Karin, it turns out Nena's photo, "this is your photo?"
"Yes, Mas. Photo of me as a baby, why is it here?" Nena asked by turning her head towards Justin in her arms, looking for a look that might be as confused as she was, but the man who was hugging her even smiled indistinctly.
"That means papah really loves his daughter." The husband's answer made Nena's heart drift, "she often fell asleep on the sofa while hugging this photo." Justin took a picture of Nena's hand.
"Dad?"
Justin nodded, returning to his attention to the picture of the baby girl that seemed to have been taken at birth, "how could I know this is your photo? All babies look the same face."
"There are many in a rich house gini, the mother is diligent to take pictures of the growth and development of her child, she said the problem every second will not be able to return."
"I also have a photo of a toddler."
"Dad, I want to see dong."
"Later to see in the apartment," he said, putting the object in his hand on the nightstand. "Funny also you fit still a baby, later we make one rich gini ya." Justin's joke gets an elbow in the stomach until his embrace is released. He wondered why the wife always looked clumsy when discussing things like this. And that even made him more intensely tempting Nena in order to meet the look of annoyance on the beautiful face of his wife.
