LEGEND OF THE ORIGIN OF SURABAYA

In the past, in the vast ocean (exactly in the Java Sea), lived 2 wild animals that are both equally arrogant and do not want to lose. The two animals are a shark and a crocodile. Because they live side by side, the two animals often quarrel and fight when fighting over food. Because both are equally strong, agile, ferocious, and both are equally clever, fights always go because no one can win and no one can lose. Furthermore, the two animals feel bored and tired if they have to always fight. Understanding such a thing the two then agreed to enter into an agreement on the division of power space.

” Hai Crocodile, long time I am tired of fighting with you. ” said shark Sura. ” Hmm, Me too, Sura. So, what do we have to do so that our fights can stop? ” ask Crocodile. ” To avoid another fight between us, how best if we divide this area into 2 power areas. I have power in the water and can only find prey in the water, while you are in power on the land and so your prey must also be on the land. So, as a limit, we set first the land that can be reached by sea water when it recedes! “” Okay, I agree with your idea, Sura! ” said Crocodile while nodding.

Hence there was that deal, for some time the Sura shark and crocodile never fought again. Both agreed to respect the location of their respective powers. But, some time running long, the fish as prey to the shark sura began to run out in the sea. Some of the remaining fish even migrated towards the mouth of the Brantas river because they were afraid of being eaten by the Sura shark. Understanding such things, the shark sura very forced to secretly start looking for prey at the mouth of the river so as not to be caught by crocodiles. But without realizing the crocodile actually knows the behavior of the shark sura and immediately attacked him.

” Sura, why don't you abide by the deal we both agreed to? Why do you dare to enter the location of the river which is my territory? ” ask the Crocodile.” Eits... I don't abide by the deal? Do you remember the sound of our agreement? Doesn't this river runny? And because there is water, so this river also includes my territory, right? ” Said Sura. ” What do you mean Sura? Is not the river on land, the middle of your territory is at sea, meaning that the river is also my territory! ” replied Crocodile insistent.

” Ohh. Didn't I ever even say if the water was just seawater? Nor is the river water water” replied Shark Sura. ” Hmm... Apparently you intend to find trouble with me, Sura? ” jerk Crocodile.

Mouthfuls at Sura and Baya also finished with a fierce fight. The fight this time was so exciting and powerful because both felt they were equally wrong. They both bite, punch, punch, and pounce. In a relatively fast time, the river water around him where the fight was so red because of the blood coming out of the wounds of the two animals. They fought desperately. Crocodiles get a bite Sura at the end of the tail right side, until the tail is always bent to the left. Sura was bitten by her tail until it almost broke off. Because both of them have been chronically injured, both of them then stop fighting. The sunfish relented and eventually returned to the sea. Crocodiles who endure pain also feel happy because they can maintain their territory.

Not long ago it was known that the two animals in fact died because of chronic wounds from the rest of the fight. As well as in his memory, the surrounding community mentioned to give the name of Surabaya to the area around the place of fighting on Sura and Crocodile fish.
