The Temple of Eikando Zenrin-ji

Officially known as Shojuraigousan Muryojuin Zenrin-ji, the temple is commonly known as Eikando since the 7th head of the temple, Yokan Risshi. It was founded in 863 and named Zenrin-ji by Emperor Seiwa.

Although originally part of the Shingon sect, he began leaning towards the teachings of the Jodo-shu sect around the time that Yokan Risshi was the head of the temple, who was very devout to the teachings of Amida.

Over time, the temple prospered and became the main training ground for practitioners of the Seizan Zenrin-ji sect. Around 1472, the Temple of Eikando was destroyed during the Onin War and it was not until the early 16th century that the temple was renovated again.

Today, Eikando Temple holds many of Japan's National Treasures and Important Cultural Assets. The most unique Important Cultural Asset is the Mikaeri-Amida statue, where the statue's head looks back over the shoulder.

It is believed that this statue was made because of the vision that Yokan Risshi had in 1082, where he saw images of Amida who began to lead Yokan. Stunned by the event, Yokan stops and Amida looks back. This secret-filled pose is what Yokan remembers and uses as a symbol to wait for those who are late to adopt the faith.

Although photography and video are not allowed in the temple grounds, they are allowed in the park, and when the trees are lit up for this event, make the scenery Instagrammable!
