William felt very happy because on that day he did not have to play together with his friends in daycare. Kirana takes him to the mall to buy some new clothes for him. The last time she bought her clothes was when she was three years old. By the age of five, his old clothes had become too tight. As with children, she was bored after two hours of walking around looking for clothes, pants, socks, underwear, and shoes for her.
She cheered happily to see her mother heading towards the cashier. After paying for all their groceries, Kirana takes her to an ice cream cafe. He cheered happily. Her favorite ice cream is banana split. When she asked for more, her mother allowed it. Kirana just ordered a glass of lime juice for herself.
“How was the interview, Mom?” ask William.
“Current.” Kirana cleaned the ice on William's cheek before the son used his sleeve to clean it. “They asked a lot of questions and I tried to answer everything.”
“Do you get the job?” William raised his head and looked towards his mother.
“They will tell you as soon as the result is out.” Kirana shrugged both of her shoulders.
“Do you think you'll get the job, Mom?” he asked again because he was not satisfied with his mother's answer.
“Not too sure. My rival's heavy.” Kirana sighed softly. William frowned, then rubbed his mother's hand.
“Let me buy banana split if you manage to get the job, Mom.” William said to cheer him up. Kirana laughed a little.
“Who will pay for it?” ask Kirana suspiciously.
“Of course you are, Mom.” he replied cheerfully. Kirana laughs. His son knows how to make him happy again.
William almost finished his second ice cream, Kirana glanced at his watch. There is still enough time to watch a movie at home. He only took half an hour to cook his son's favorite pastry and sweet-legged corn. That means just one more thing, buying a new kids movie.
“Sorry, Mom.” greet a woman standing next to Kirana.
“Ya?” Kirana looked towards him.
The woman explained that she came from an agency that trained children to be models for advertising in print or electronic media. Before the woman explained everything further, Kirana refused. This is not the first time he has received the same offer. Since William was three months old, there had already been many offers coming to him. They were interested in making their son their advertising model. Things he would not have rejected if his circumstances were different.
Kirana is getting scared now that she has met Romeo again. The man would not know how many men he had slept with, but it would not be difficult to guess who William's real father was. Kirana can deceive the man by changing the color of his son's hair and eyeballs, but not by the resemblance to their faces.
A week later Kirana got the news from the interview. His own boss delivered it to him. He could hardly believe the news he had heard. Simon invited him and his team-mates in the marketing department to dinner together at a restaurant not far from their office.
Congratulations came for him not only from his team-mates, but also from other colleagues of the branch office. It took him more than half an hour to walk from his door to the front door of his office building. He had to pick up William from the new daycare to attend their dinner. His son immediately cheered excitedly upon learning about the happy news. He did not forget his promise to buy his mama banana split.
They had dinner cheerfully and did not stop talking to each other. Although the faces of her teammates were so happy, Kirana knew that they were hiding their true feelings. They didn't want to make her feel sad about having to leave them. But without it he could feel his chest tight. He'll miss them all.
He was a bad guy who left his comrades for a better job. But he has to do it. He had to give a better future to his son. His boss was so proud of his achievements. He was happy that at least one person was happy with his achievement.
Her son who sat by her side was so excited about spending a serving of cheese burgers for adults. Error, two servings. He chuckled as he took out a piece of fries from the top of William's plate.
The next day was a hard day for Kirana. It was his last day working at the branch office before he moved to the headquarters. Everything was going as normal as usual. But a few minutes before the hour after work, his colleagues and his assistant entered his room. They gave her a beautifully wrapped parting gift. The box was quite large, Kirana could not guess what it contained.
As they shook his hand saying farewell and thanking him, they could not help themselves anymore. Both Kirana and her comrades' faces were wet with tears. They promised to communicate with each other and meet when they could take their time. One more chapter in his life was closed. A new round will open soon.
William was happy to see his mother pick him up in a taxi. He thought they were going to go out to dinner with Kirana's co-workers again. When he saw some boxes and pockets in the back seat of the car, he understood why they did not go home on the city bus.
Kirana cooks fried rice with scrambled eggs, sausages, and stir-fried broccoli for their dinner. Finished eating and washing the dishes, William followed him into the front room. Although he had deliberately turned on the television and installed one of their children's film DVD collections, William was more interested in seeing what the contents in the bags and boxes his mother brought from the office.
He gets several watches, a handbag, a bag of clothing, a unique drink bottle, a mug, and a dress that he can use to work. The last unopened box is the gift of its division counterparts. William sat on the side of the box, curious about the contents of the big box.
There's a lot of stuff in it. A large picture frame inside which contained photos taken while they were fieldtriped with matching clothes and happy faces, a photo album of their respective selfies with her accompanied by their messages and impressions for her, a box of ten packs of powdered chocolate with her favorite marshmallows hard to come by, and a huge mug with his name etched onto its surface.
They will be greatly missed.
