"He called and demanded ransom from your parents when his criminal friend told him about a child trafficking group willing to give him double the amount he requested. He doesn't want to risk being tracked if he asks for more money increases from your parents, so he managed to get two dead girls' bodies in a house fire and burned beyond recognition, and then he traded them for your baby's clothes. He had a fake accident and the couple was told. They thought you were both dead and didn't want a DNA test to verify it. They could not bear to." his hands trembled as he spoke but he clasped his hands tightly together.
"Is none of this mentioned on the news?" exasperatedly.
"He kidnapped you two before anyone else was told that your mother had given birth to triplets. After the couple found the two babies dead, they didn't want anyone to know so they just said that only one baby girl was born. Soon after, she was arrested and charged with kidnapping and murder before she could sell you both, she left you in the care of my sister. He did not take part in his criminal activities and for the most part he was unaware of what he was used to doing. The child trafficking group was also arrested but they did not know that he was involved in it. After she was imprisoned for life, my sister took over to take care of you. He does not want to return you to your parents for fear of being charged with kidnapping and he has formed an attachment to you"
"If she starts taking care of us, why isn't my other sister here with me? What happened to her?"
There were so many questions that came to my mind, but the most important of all was about what happened to the third.
"After you two were two, my sister was in debt and she couldn't afford to take care of both of you, so she left the other daughter in front of the park. She was eventually adopted into a family and they looked good enough that my brother let her go. He married a nice guy afterwards because he wanted to give you a life that was close to what you deserved and at least you deserved a father. He can get you a fake birth certificate and they raised you together. That's all it is".
I fell silent after hearing the story, not knowing how to react. I have three sisters and a brother, plus my parents are not dead. They've been around me for the last few months. They're very close to me. My life would have been very different if we hadn't been kidnapped. And what about my other sister who assumed the name Darina? Has he been okay all this time? And all this time she was pretending to be my sister, not knowing that we had a blood relationship and we resembled each other was not a strange coincidence.
"Why hasn't aunt told me before? If I hadn't asked, would aunt never have told me?"
Elisha looked at me sharply. "We don't want you to get hurt. We thought you better not know"
"I better not know," I scoffed. "My whole life would have been different if this hadn't happened. I just spent twenty years of my life living among strangers, calling others my father and mother. Have you ever wondered how unfair this is to me? My whole life is a lie!"
"We're sorry. Darla
"Darla?" I shook my head, tested the name "Darla?. Is that my real name?"
"Dear, that's your real name. We know your name. She named you the day you were born. The person who was with them at this time was Adinda Daria Daralyn. Your real name is Adinda Darla Daralyn and the other poor girl's name is Adinda Darina Daralyn. We can't forget it. We want you to have something that belongs to you. We make sure your first name and middle name are really yours. We can't forget what we've done. We destroyed your family. I hope you can forgive us one day. We're really sorry." Elisha crying. "We didn't mean to be mean to you. We don't want this to happen to you."
At that moment I was crying. I knew the full story but it didn't feel real.I felt like I was in a dream, exactly a nightmare, feeling so detached from everything like I had nothing to do with anything that happened. It felt strange and could not describe it exactly.
"I'll go" I said and gathered my things.
Throughout it all, my uncle who was not my uncle anymore, sat there with a poker face and did not say a word for that long. He is a man who does not talk much. Perhaps he does not know what to say in dramatic situations where he is needed to comfort and calm someone.
Without caring about them anymore, I started walking towards the door.
"Darla.....Darlaa!". Auntie ran after me and finally followed. "Please, forgive us We know we have committed an unforgivable crime but we really love you. We may have lied to you about our relationship, but our bond is real. My brother really loves you and never thought you were smaller than a child to him. He works hard to give you a life that is close to what you deserve".
"Mom aunt," I said, unsure how to greet her now I can't deal with anything right now.
"I need to go to think clearly I'll call you later .. maybe."
I'm not waiting for anything else. I got into the car and left without looking back.
....
About half an hour on my way home, I had to stop by the roadside to let the tears flow freely and let out my angry cries to accept all reality.
It was five o'clock in the afternoon when I finally reached the cafe. I had taken a day off but after being told, the best thing was to keep myself busy.
When I opened the glass door, I was shocked to find Anna and Gio at the corner table drinking coffee. From the looks of it, their conversation was neither pleasant nor intense. I wanted to know what was going on, but I appreciated their privacy at the moment, so I took my place behind the desk.
Madam Angel did not expect me to come, but she did not say anything as I replaced her position and started taking the remaining orders. Gio saw me working and it felt awkward but he waved at me and I replied.
A few minutes later they finished their conversation and Gio stood up to leave and I took it as a gesture to get closer. Anna tidied up their plates and glasses and also cleaned the table while we stood outside to chat.
"Hey, how are you?" I asked while smiling at him when I saw he looked better than the last time I saw him.
He looks amused "You can just get to the point and ask about him"
"Hey!" I'm a little offended. I actually asked him despite wanting to ask about Devan later.
"I'm doing fine. And you how are you?"
I shrugged my shoulders. "I'm fine" I was quite surprised that Gio already knew everything.
"Yes, you two are good friends. I'd be surprised if he didn't tell you. I have to admit you two are great actors. I didn't think you knew"
"I'm a little angry because my own sister or even Luna didn't tell me."
"We don't want many people to know. So how's it going? Is he mad at me?"
Gio shook his head. "He's fine and he's not mad at you."
But I can't be calm yet. "Did she not want to see me again?"
"No, not like that. He was busy moving out and going home. Luna threatened her not to approach you until everything was sorted out because you know, Daria was very hard to convince to not say anything about this to her parents."
Oh, but how I wish he'd told them. They are my biological parents and Daria is my sister and there is still a lot they do not know about my family.
"What's wrong?" Gio frowned at me as he saw my change in attitude
I shook my head. "There's nothing. What are you and Anna talking about?"
"I'm sure he'll explain it to you in detail."
"He'll do it. So, are you leaving?"
"Yes, I just stopped by to talk to him and say hello to you"
Anna came back after finishing her task and she said goodbye to us before leaving. It was nice to meet him. I miss everyone I met while I was there.
I turned towards Anna with my hands on my hips. "Hey lady, now there's a lot you need to explain".
He rolled his eyes. "That's no more important than what happened at your aunt's house"
I repeated everything to him over coffee. In the end he was surprised even though he could already guess.
"You really are their daughter??! What are you still doing here? Come back and reunite with your real parents!"
I sighed while tracing the pattern on top of my empty coffee cup.
"Anna, I just found out. I can hardly believe it. It's not like being able to directly tell them and start living with them."
"And why not?"
"Not that I won't tell them. I just need time to digest it. It's not every day that people know something like this about him."
"I don't think you're right, even I can't imagine how you feel."
I didn't want to talk about it anymore, so I asked about Gio.
"He wants to start over. He apologized for his mistake that day. I said it was okay.it was an acceptable reaction from someone who lost their child before they even knew it. I also apologize for being mean to her and not trusting her enough to vent".
"That's great. So, are you going to start dating or what?"
She smiled subconsciously, "Yeah, but we agreed we both needed time for each other"
"I'm sorry Anna, for what I've done to you both. I have no right to decide who deserves who. I used to think that Gio was too good for you and as your best friend, I was ashamed of myself having evil thoughts about you. Will we be able to go back to how we used to be?"
He shrugged his shoulders. "It's okay. And it takes time, but I think we can. I also apologize for blaming my aborsiku on you. Now look at your innocence for that. I did this to myself and despite feeling so guilty that my baby had to suffer from my carelessness and stupidity. Maybe this is the best for me. I will still continue to regret for my dead baby."
I could see him inconspicuously clutching the cloth on his stomach. It's always like that whenever the topic being talked about is about her pregnancy or abortion
"It's okay, I want to support you." I grabbed him and rubbed his back to be comfortable as his eyes got wet "In the end, we'll be fine."
He gave me a small smile and grabbed my shoulder. "Yes, we'll be fine." He said sadly as we gazed out the window towards the unfolding world.
